Focus on Project Life

I love using my regular scrapbooking supplies in my Project Life album, so I was excited when Lily Bee decided to focus on Project Life during the first week of 2013 (and this last day of 2012)! This week you'll also be seeing sneaks of the new Lily Bee lines being released at the upcoming CHA Winter show, so it's going to be a fun week all around.

 

I chose to go back and pick up a Project Life spread from October that I still hadn't scrapped- I don't stress at all about being "behind" on my Project Life. In fact, since I send photos out to be printed instead of printing at home, I really like waiting a few weeks (or more) to get it all scrapped- it lets me send out prints in bigger, more cost-effective print orders. As long as I'm scrapping at least one Project Life spread per week and am relatively caught up on having photos edited and resized to order, I'm good. Some weeks that one spread is in my 2012 album, and sometimes it's in my 2011 album (as I did here on the Lily Bee blog last November).

 

Lily Bee's 6x6 Tiny Tablets and Index Journal Cards are perfect for scrapping Project Life- the 6x6 tablets can be easily cut down to 4x6 or 3x4 pocket inserts with strips left over for embellishment elsewhere, and the Index Journal Cards are of course perfect for writing.

ABC Cardstock Stickers | Tutorial

One of my very favorite Lily Bee products are the ABC Cardstock Stickers. I love that there are so many little letters on these sheets and they are perfect for adding journaling, subtitles, and labels to my layouts.

But sometimes the large 12 x 12 sheet makes it difficult to get these tiny alphas off their backing and onto my page! So I've cut my large sheets down into a more manageable size. Using a kraft knife and my clear ruler, I simply slice up the alpha sets by color.

Once they are cut down, these little alpha sheets are much easier to use. And they fit perfectly into a litle bucket on my scrap desk, so I can easily grab whatever color I need:

The smaller sized sheets can be easily bent slightly, allowing the letter to come off the backing without ripping or tearing:

Once the letter starts to peel away from the backing, I use my kraft knife to pull it off the sheet.  This seems to work better than my clumsy fingers, which often rip the tiny alphas.

Then I use my knife to line up the letter before sticking it down to my page.  When I have several lines of lettering on a layout, I use pencil guide lines to get everything straight (and erase them afterwards!)

The result is perfectly aligned lettering every time!

December Guest Designer-Leigh Penner

It's Thursday again and we are back with a fabulous "Resolution Kept" layout by our Guest Designer Leigh Penner.

I created a layout to document the fact that for the first time ever, I kept my New Year's resolution that I made on December 31, 2011. I used products from the Persnickety line to create my layout, which has some fun interacitve elements to it.

In addition to the banner I created at the top of the page with the little triangle stickers (which seemed fitting, seeing as I'm celebrating this achievement),  I also added some tags behind my largest photo. The off-white tag (created from an index journaling card), pulls out to reveal my journaling:

I cut out my title on my silhouette portrait and it left enough space to add a cute stamp, which just seems so perfect for this layout. The sentiment was stamped on another index journaling card, which I trimmed down and stitched in place.

I matted my two black and photos on a folded and diecut piece of cardstock. I stamped and used handwriting and stickers to encourage people to lift the tab...

And reveal my new goals for 2013:

I added a Flair button & a regular button with twine to a trimmed down index journaling card to make an embellishment cluster on my largest photo.

Focusing on Cards

Good morning! 

We wish you very happy holidays from all of us here at Lily Bee. 

Today we have Andrea and Becky here with some fun card ideas to help you 

ring in the new year. 

You never know when you might need a card for a special occasion and these 

cards will hopefully inspire you as you create for others. 

First up is this gorgeous card from Andrea. I love how cheery and bright 

it is and this would surely delight anyone who received it: 

She brings in so much color and texture on this card. 

About her card Andrea says, " I love creating cards that may not fit 

perfectly inside an envelope. With a bit of 3d foam adhesive and favorite 

Lily Bee collections, you can take your card making to a whole new level."

Andrea began creating this card by stamping and layering paper strips on the 

front of a folded piece of cardstock.  Next, add foam adhesive to the back

side of the index journal card, add the ribbon and adhere it to the front 

of the card.  Add stamped elements (such as the butterfly) using foam 

adhesive or craft glue.  Bend the wings upwards to create more dimension.  

Using a safety pin, add a paper heart from Victoria Park Bag of Bits 

collection along with buttons.

With 2012 coming to a close I decided to create a card to celebrate the

coming year. 

This card was quick and easy to create by simply layering a couple of 

journaling cards and adding the sentiment. Don't be afraid to cut into 

your cards like i did here. It adds a unique touch to your project and allows 

you to use the products in different ways. 

I cut the "Today" from one of the journaling cards and used it as a 

highlight on the card.

Focus on the Year

Happy Holidays everyone!  The New Year is just around the bend so it is a time for reflection!  This week, we will bring you projects focused on how you can celebrate the changing year.  Will you choose to look back and think about the main highlights of 2012 or will you look forward to 2013? 

I am thinking ahead, using the past year's events to drive my reflections. December is the time when I begin identifying my "word of the year".  It takes a while for me to consider what one word sums up my personal vision.  A "word of the year" becomes a mantra for my actions, wishes, and thoughts.  What better way to record my word than to make a layout about it!

I chose the word "Aware" for 2013.  I wanted a playful, happy feeling to the layout.  It represents how I hope to be more aware...of who I want to be, of others around me, of how I can make a positive contribution.

It is no secret that I love the hexagons in the Lily Bee lines so I made one the star of this page.  I simply cut randomly around the hexagons, creating a casading piece that would ground my photo. I also placed some half hexagons along the bottom of the page.

I clustered a few of the Cardstock stickers that had phrases or words to match my page.  The "Everyday Stuff" strip was cut from an Index Journal Card.

Holiday Inspiration | Easy Ornaments from Scraps

Good morning, everyone! I'm so happy that you've stopped by to visit here on the Lily Bee blog today!

December is one of those times where you might find yourself bitten by the crafting bug at the most inopportune moment- there's nothing quite so frustrating as being inspired to play with pretty paper and not having the time to do it! Today I'm going to share two easy Christmas ornaments you can make from your paper scraps, and they're fairly fast to boot!

The first ornament is the most time consuming to assemble, but it still takes less than an hour from start to finish, including punching out all those circles! If you wanted to make a bunch, you could assembly-line these and churn out several in no time!

Start with 1" circle punch and punch out a pile from your scraps- this is a great way to use up some of those little bits of paper that might be hanging around from other projects. Once you have all the circles punched, grab a styrofoam ball (I got mine in the floral section of my local craft store) and a hot glue gun. Start by putting a small dab of glue on the ball, then covering it with just one of the punched circles. This will be the base of the ornament. Use the hot glue gun to add a ring of adhesive about 1/2" above the edge of the circle, then adhere a row of punched circles all the way around the ball. Continue adding rows until you reach to top of the ball.

Before adhering the last row, glue another single dot to the top of the ball (in the center of the uncovered area), then stick the last row down, overlapping the edges of the top circle. Finish by inserting an head pin (or any beading pin) into the top of the ball and securing with a small dab of hot glue. Use needle-nose pliers to bend the top of the head pin into a loop (to create a place to add an ornament hook), then tie a bow with ribbon to complete.

If hot glue and pliers aren't in your crafting plans at this time, then this next ornament might be right up your alley. All you need are 1" paper strips, a paper trimmer, a stapler, and less than ten minutes of time.

This "onion" style ornament is made by cutting two 1" strips of paper at 11", two at 9", and two at 7" (really, you only need one 7" strip, but since the paper is double-sided and I wanted the same pattern on both sides, I used 2). Gather one set of ends of the paper strips together so they're flush with each other and staple together. Flip the set of strips upside down (so now you're holding the other set of ends), and arrange them so that they're flush, as well (this is what creates the "onion" shape). Staple again, punch a hole in the top and thread an ornament hook in, and you're done! 

The dimensions I gave above yield a rather large ornament, so if you need something smaller feel free to play with the proportions to get the size you need.

December Guest Designer-Leigh Penner

Hi Everyone, Kristen here with you today to show off a gorgeous Photo Tray by our Guest Designer Leigh Penner.  She takes us step by step as to her process in how she created this Holiday Photo Tray using our Persnickety Collection.

Leigh said When I got my Lily Bee products, I immediately knew that I wanted to use them to decorate a decorative tray that I'd purchased earlier this fall for Christmas. I chose a word for each opening of the tray that didn't have a photo. Each word is one that I feel represents this wonderful holiday season. I used the Lily Bee Persnickety line, as well as some cardstock, dies, stamps, buttons and twine from my stash.

I stamped the "Love" sentiment on an index journal card, added some twine and buttons and layered it over some patterned paper, stitching it in place.

For "joy", I stamped on some light pink cardstock that I'd diecut and added some twine and buttons. For "hope", I cut out the word on my silhouette portrait, using dark grey cardstock. I diecut a star border and added a star button with some twine.

This part was done very similarly to "hope," except that I used a heart border and added two buttons with twine.

Here I diecut a doily with cardstock and layered it over some patterned paper, I added a stamped banner (cut from another index journaling card) and a little tree made from a Persnickety sticker. And, I couldn't resist adding a little button to finish it off!

I stamped "peace" on a diecut piece of cardstock and added two more banners, cut from patterned paper and an index journaling card.  Two little buttons stitched in place with twine finish it off.

"Wonder" was also cut on my silhouette & layered over patterned paper. I then stitched on three buttons. And for my last card, I diecut some banners from the sticker sheet and an index journaling card and added the Xmas 2012 with stickers.

Holiday Inspiration Week 3 | Banner & Christmas Cards

Good Morning!  I hope you have all been enjoying the projects that the Design Team has worked up over the past few weeks! It was a nice change to create these altered projects that can be used as home decor over the holidays!  

Today, Leslie and I are going to share with you a couple more projects. I have created a JOY banner and Leslie is sharing three adorable cards!

I created this JOY banner by using some canvas triangles. I sprayed them with red mist and let them dry. Just a tip, they take QUITE a while to dry - so, be prepared to let them sit for a while!  I then cut out some paper triangles using the "Christmas Cheer" collection. I stitched these together and distressed the edges. I then took some chipboard pieces and coated them with Versamark ink and then sprinkled some gold embossing powder on them. I shook off the excess powder and set them with a heat gun. I layered a snowflake and a punched pinked circle and then glued by letter on top. I used gold paint and placed some dots on the snowflakes and brushed some on the outside edges of the pattern paper. After putting all these together, I adhered the paper triangles to the canvas triangles by stitching along the outer edge of the paper triangle. I used my glue gun to adhere the chipboard frames to the triangles. Lastly, I ran a thick piece of ribbon through the grommets on the corners of each triangle while leaving enough on the ends to either tie somewhere or pin up.

I decided to make 3 tiny cards (they’re 4” x 4” squares) with the same “winter” theme.

One is a 3D tree, one is a snowflake and the other is a snowman that I cut on my Silhouette Cameo.
You can use these as gift cards for packages or place cards for a Christmas party, dinner or get together.

Holiday Inspiration Week 3 | Holiday Tin, Gift Tags & More...

Happy Tuesday everyone! There's seven more days left until Christmas. I can't believe how close it is and there is still a lot of baking and shopping to be done. Today, Andrea, Stacey & I (Cindy) have some inspirational projects to add to your gift giving, scrapbooks and new traditions for the holiday season.

Stacey created holiday traditions tin, a fabulous twist to a December daily and great family keepsake.

Supplies: Christmas Cheer (Santa's Sleigh, Reindeer Games, 6X6 Tiny Tablet, Clear Stamps, Index Journal Card, Mixed Cardstock Sticker, ABC Sticker)

I decided to create a keepsake tin that could double as holiday decor.  I have it placed in the middle of a vingette on my coffee table. Truth be told, I've had a hard time committing to a December Daily, but want to document a big tradition in our house.

Each December, our elf comes to visit.  I simply used festive papers from the 6X6 Tiny Tablet to decorate the top of the tin and then filled the inside with photos and journaling cards. For the outside of the tin,  I layered some of my favorite patterns and placed the "A Christmas Story"  journaling card in the center.  I used the Tradition stamp along the side to really capture the purpose of the box.

The winking Santa was cut from the Santa's Sleigh paper. I think the theme of the box could easily be adapted to make a thoughtful gift for a family member.

I made a dozen holiday tags that would not only be great for gift wrap but also a good addition to any craft project, layout or December daily.

I focused on using the Christmas Cheer clear stamps for this project and kept the colors consistent and used several different sizes and styles of white tags.

Each tag is stamped with a phrase or image and heat embossed using embossing powder. I love the look of using the embossing powder. It's less messy than using glitter and will last a lot longer over time.

Lastly, Andrea adds a new twist in gift card wrapping.

Finding a new way to "wrap" your gift cards today.  Picked up a few glass jars while walking the aisles of a local craft store.  With our gift card gifts for all of the teachers again this year, it was time to have a little fun wrapping them all up in Lily Bee's Christmas Cheer collection in a fun way. 

Fill the jar with glitter, paper pieces, a handmade card.  Slip in your gift card and it is time to embellish the outside.  Created yarn tassels for a little warmth against the cold glass.  Fabric ribbon and a vintage button complete the top of the jar. 

Then, use those mixed cardstock stickers and index journal card to create a folded gift tag.

Holiday Inspiration Week 3

It's week three of our Holiday Inspiration week and the ideas keep coming from our design team! Today, Deanna Misner, Melissa Stinson and I (Nicole Nowosad) are back again to share with you more festive holiday projects !

Deanna is sharing this fun altered project with us:

Supplies: Autumn Spice patterned paper, Christmas Cheer (patterned paper, index journaling cards, mixed cardboard stickers)

For today's post, I thought I'd do a little bit of a "green" project and up cycle a McDonald's Happy Meal boxinto a Gingerbread house decorated with my favorite Lily Bee supplies! First I covered the box with the "All Spice" paper from the Autumn Spice collection, the brown dots give it the feel of gingerbread with a little texture too. Then I added half-circles to the roof for shingles. I made the door and a few pinwheel "lollipops" to decorate the front, and then altered some Lily Bee index journaling cards to create windows on the sides. Oh, and I popped Santa in one of the windows for little bit of added fun and interest. Next, all of the scalloped chipboard trim received a good frosting of transparent glitter glue, and I finished off my gingerbread house with a couple of stickers for adornment on the front and back.

After lots of Christmas themed scrapbooking with Lily Bee's Christmas
Cheer collection, I found myself with quite a few scraps left over!
Instead of tossing them or filing them with the rest of my scraps, I
decided to use them some of them up right away on a set of Christmas
tags.

 It's very easy to layer up tiny paper bits, punched shapes, and
stickers to quickly create unique and beautiful gift tags!

I found this little wooden sled and thought it would be a cute decoration all prettied up with some Christmas Cheer!

Supplies used: Christmas Cheer 6x6 Tiny Tablet, Journalling Cards, Cardstock Mixed Stickers, ABC mini alphas

I painted the sled with a creamy white paint and then covered it with some of the paper from the 6x6 tiny tablet. I trimmed the journalling card to a pennant shape, added the alphas and some stitching too.

with some burlap trim, a tiny banner, some sparkly chipboard and even some little jingle bells and I was done :)

Welcome to another day of Holiday Inspiration.  Patricia here to share with you a wreath I made for our home.  

I used mini grapevine wreaths and floral wire (wrapped in the same grapevine material as the wreaths), you can find in the craft stores.  Wrapped all the mini wreaths together using the wire, then thread a long piece of red wire ribbon and finished it off with a large bow.

I adhered the cut out poinsettias with Zip Dry glue but not so many as to cover up the pretty wreaths and threaded ribbon.  I still wanted that to show.  I cut out leaves as well and embossed with silver to tuck behind each poinsettia to add a little sparkle.

The 3d pinecones really added to the woodsy look of the wreath.  I tied those on with twine.

Guest Designer | December | Leigh Penner

It's December and that means a new Guest Designer for us here on the Lily Bee blog!  We were so impressed with all of the Design Team applications that came in a couple months ago, that we've selected a few of our favorites here to our blog over the next few months as our Guest Designers! One of those fabulously talnted ladies, is December's Guest, Leigh Penner!  Please welcome, Leigh and let's get to know her a bit more before jumping into her gorgeous projects for this week!

My name is Leigh Penner and I live in Morden, Manitoba, Canada, with my husband of 16 years, Cameron, and our three children: Austin (13), Jonah (10) & Sage (8). Although I would love to craft full time (wouldn't that be fabulous?), most days, I work as a substitute teacher at our local high school.

I started scrapbooking almost 10 years ago, when Jonah was 9 months old. I hosted a class at my home and was instantly hooked!  I love everything about this hobby: taking photos, playing with paper, making embellishments, stamping and journaling. It's just all so wonderful! My style tends to be more clean and simple, but with some fun details & stitching thrown in here and there. Over the past two years, I've gotten more into card making as well and I consider myself equally a scrapbooker and a card maker.

I've been on a few design teams over the years and have had several layouts, cards and mini-albums published in publications such as Creating Keepsakes, Scrapbooks Etc., Simple Scrapbooks, Scrapbook Answers, Memory Makers, Scrapbook Trends, Papercrafts & Cards Magazine. I was thrilled to be asked by Lily Bee to guest design for them this month!

When I'm not making cards or layouts, I enjoy going for bike rides (but only when it's warm out!), reading and cuddling on the couch with my kids and watching movies. I have my first degree black belt in taekwondo (& hope to test for my 2nd degree next spring). I have also recently taken up knitting and crocheting.

We asked Leigh to help us out during our Holiday Inspiration Series and she's done a super job this week sharing how you can use Persnickety even for your holiday packaging and decorating! Here's what Leigh had to say about her projects:

The colours and designs in the Persnickety line are just so pretty, I couldn't resist using them to make some Christmas gift tags and treat bags.

To wrap up a gift for our taekwondo instructor, I cut a piece of patterned paper to 7" wide and wrapped it over the white wrapping paper. I added another tag with some ribbon. Using several dies and using the negative  part of a tree, I was able to build my tag. I also diecut part of a sticker to ground my tree and I added two little brads as embellishments.

I made the tag by diecutting some patterned paper with a die. I matted one of the Lily Bee stickers on some cardstock before adhering it to my card. I also matted one of the little triangle stickers-- by adding a strip of patterned paper for the stump, it becomes an adorable little Christmas tree! A stamped sentiment on a banner diecut, some ribbon, a button and some twine finish it off.

For my treat bag, I cut a banner from the green chevron patterned paper and adhered it to the front of my bag.  I then diecut a doily and banner. I stamped on the banner, scored it, folded it and adhered it to the patterned paper, using foam adhesive. On the doily, I adhered some more triangle stickers and created a little grouping of trees, all with patterned paper stumps before adhering it to the treat bag. -Leigh Penner

Get Your Holiday Card GAME ON!

All week, we're showcasing some pretty rocking holiday inspired projects. Today, our spotlight is on some new card ideas for those few folks you haven't quite got cards made for.

Join Danielle, Ursula and Andrea as we take you for a little inspiration stroll through our card making ideas.

Let's start with Andrea who is working with dies to create this festive card. With layers of paper from the Christmas Cheer collection, this card uses both label and border dies.  To create the stamped trees, simply use the arrow stamp from the Autumn Spice collection (just the end of it) for the trunk of the tree and the polka dot pennant from the Christmas Cheer clear stamp set as the tree.

I (Ursula) was feeling the layer love for my first card.  I took a standard white base and started adding brightly colored pennants, die cuts and some wood veneer to complete the look. Inspired by the colors of my bathroom towels, I found fushia, red, aqua and green to create a modern festive look.  A little ink on the edges helped the pale pieces pop.

 

Add a little sparkle with glitter paper and a gem and you have a card that is quick and lovely to look at.

This next card uses the same palette, but in a very different manner.  I sewed together strips of the colored papers and then layered them behind a star cut out, mounting the strips to the card with the pop dots to create dimension.

Finally, Danielle added her beautiful touch. Danielle says 'I love making pocket cards, they are great for the holidays to hang on the tree as a little gift card holder. I cut a frame shape with my die cut machine from the Christmas Cheer paper (one piece for the front and one for the back of the pocket) and adhered the edges, leaving the top open for goodies. The front is decorated with a Christmas Cheer journaling card, heart punched from the Christmas Cheer paper and a "Merry Christmas" sentiment stamped with the Christmas Cheer stamps. Tuck in some candy canes, confetti and either a gift card or holiday photo for the recipient!'

Hello Lily Bee fans! We're back with even more merry and bright inspiration for you! Today, Summer has a quick and easy project to brighten your holiday home. She created a customized garland by layering punched flowers over tiny string lights:

After punching the flowers from the Christmas Cheer 6x6 Tiny Tablet, she layered two flowers together and used the large hole punch on her Crop-a-dile to make the center opening. The large hole punch is the perfect size to snugly fit a mini bulb. (Summer got this string of battery-powered lights from Target.)

Next, Leslie has an adorable holiday decor idea with an altered vintage bingo card. She also used the Christmas Cheer line, layering several triangles of patterned paper to create a tree, which she adhered to a bingo card base:

The scallop border punch makes the perfect edge for the tree boughs!

Finally, Lisa has a pillow box that is perfect for holding gift cards, jewelry, or small stocking stuffers:

Using the template below, Lisa cut the boxes from Christmas Cheer papers, gluing the long tab to the opposite side and folding in the scored tabs on the end.

To secure the box shut, she added a matching ribbon, layering a punched scallop circle and Mixed Cardstock sticker on top.

Holiday Inspiration Week 2 | Presents, Pine Cones, & Garland!

Happy Monday morning! Thanks for joining us again on the Lily Bee Design blog! We hope you have been enjoying all of the holiday inspiration that was shared last week and are ready for another week of ideas! 

Today, Anna-Maria, Becky, and myself (Melissa M.) are going to share with you some Lily Bee wrapped presents, Christmas Tree garland, and Paper Pine-cones!

First off, we have Becky with a cute, easy-to-make garland that she put on her Christmas tree! Here's what she has to say:

For my project this week I did something that was quick and simple. Many of us don't have a lot of extra time for holiday crafting so we want projects to be easy to complete. This paper chain made with the Christmas Cheer collection took only about 20 minutes and looks great on our tree!

I cut the strips 3/4 inch wide and alternated between the different patterns until the chain was long enough to fit our tree. This would be a fun project do do while watching one of your favorite holiday movies or something your kids can help you with!

And lastly, I have some Paper Pine Cones to share with you! These little pine-cones were super easy to make! I punched out a bunch of squares with a punch. I folded one side of each square into a V. I took an egg shaped foam ball and used flat head straight pins to stick the pieces of paper into it. I worked from the bottom up, making sure to layer slightly the higher I went. Lastly, I looped a piece of ribbon and pinned it into the foam; pinned on some leaves I made from Kraft paper, and glued on some faux berries!
